Sumo Can Robot

The rules of “Sumo-Can” are that the robot will be placed in the centre of a wrestling ring. The robot then has to detect a can placed in the ring, move to it and push it past the outside of the ring. The robot then must drive back to the centre of the ring and search for another can.

To begin, a circuit had to be created to perform the desired outcome. The circuit makes use of logic gates, capacitors, resistors and timer circuits to control left and right motors to change the movement of the sumo can based on input from two optical sensors.

PCB Design

The circuit schematic was then converted into a PCB layout to prepare it for manufacture. This used tracks on the upper and lower surface to aid track position and routing.

Result

The final robot performed exactly as intended and the project was awarded a first as a result.
